KAT 5 Animal Rescue is a grassroots, non-profit corporation designed for the protection of animals when natural or man-made disasters strike and to protect animals when they are discovered to be in harms way.
Our actions are both proactive and reactive in nature:

Dispatch for ground rescuers to physically rescue animals,
Soliciting supplies and funds for specific immediate needs and dispersal of the same,
Reliable and safe animal placement with transport away from the endangered area.
Support of spay/neuter events
Shelter intervention programs
Medical funding for sick or abused animals in need
ALL who are interested in rescuing/ foster dogs are welcome! Our mission educational support ~ to save as many as possible!
Many times people will foster dogs & do nothing more for them. This list (with respect) is not for them. Again, ALL ways are welcomed for discussion that do not harm the dog. Negative responses/judgements/sarcasm, etc will not be allowed.
Most of the time, dogs abandoned are seen as problem dogs. This baggage is left for someone else to solve - or euthanize the dog.
We work here together to find unique solutions, shared resources and skills to empower each other to greater successes in our efforts - no matter the skill or knowledge level.
We exist to help interested volunteers learn additional methods and solutions about how to help dogs move quickly from rescue into adoption by teaching obedience, behavior & socialization skills in home environments that can be used in these dogs new forever homes!
Many people are afraid to get involved with fostering, afraid to become attached, or afraid they will become over whelmed or even to be "stuck" with the dog.
We have solutions with all these challenges & more. Learn how to "market" special needs or dogs with more challenging adoption considerations, use advanced behavior & socialization skills, set up short term fostering, work with multiple dogs, use “good dog” to teach “new dog”, help prepare a dog to become a Therapy Dog or pass Canine Good citizen award.
Many of us have learned/used Nat Geo Channel’s Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan solutions successfully to save last chance dogs. All techniques/solutions that do not harm the dog are welcomed. We seek to add our efforts to the national rescue model Best Friends (DogTown).
This does NOT mean that you need to take the worst or problem cases. Every dog in a shelter is at risk of euthanasia so, every dog WE get out of shelters, gives them a chance at a good life.
No room for more dogs? Help us market special needs and other animals with your abilities, hobbies and passions!
Use your computer skills to market dogs that don’t show well at adoptathons,~ help with multistate rescue transportations, ~home visits, ~bring your dog handler skills to a rescue/shelter, or facilitating new dog introductions into new homes to help reduce return rate to rescues, when new adopted dog & new family are not a good match.
Old or new to the art of rescue or fostering? Welcome! List Moderated.
Castaway Pet Rescue is an Illinois licensed, non-profit rescue originating in 2008. We are in the process of filing for the 501(c)3 tax exempt status. We primarily take dogs from open admissions shelters that have to deal with over-crowding. These are the dogs at risk of death. We do not have a building for kenneling dogs. They come live with us in our foster homes where they receive love, guidance, and medical care. The foster families get to know the personality of the dog in a home environment. This enables us to match the dogs with a terrific new home with people who will not cast them away.
Castaway Pet Rescue likes to focus on saving the dogs that have no hope. They are lingering in shelters, hoping they are not dragged out to the death room or gas chamber. In January we rescued many dogs from shelters in South Carolina that still use the gas chamber. It was a huge undertaking and Castaway volunteers came through like pros.
We know we can never save them all, not even all from only the one shelter. But, the more foster homes we have, the more we can save. If you can open your heart and home for a puppy or dog for a few weeks, you too can save lives. Castaway provides all the supplies and vetting the dogs need. You just provide a temporary home and love. We are especially in need of temporary homes for medium to large dogs. Large dogs of many breeds are vastly over-abundant in the shelters and die every day. Why not celebrate all our pets do for us by helping another?! Try fostering once and see if you like it. We know the dogs will.
