Miami's Walk for the Animals Produces Record Breaking Attendance!

Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 03:20 PM EST [General]

It was a  record gathering of 3,300 participants and their dogs at Bayfront Park.  The occasion: The 9th Annual Purina Walk for the Animals, the only fundraising walk-a-thon in Miami for dogs and their companions. It was a most amazing scene as dogs and humans pushed toward the starting line in order to participate in the one-mile stroll around Bayfront Park.

Before the start of the walk the crowd was greeted by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman, Grand Marshall; University of Miami President Donna Shalala, Leader of the Pack; Divine Savoir Church, and Academy Principal Ben Troge, M. Ed, Education, Chairman. Then, exactly at 10 AM-- it was off and walking.

For people who arrived early and those folks who didn't participate in the actual walk, there were lots of activities to enjoy. The Miami Science Museum had fascinating displays; the Miami Children's Museum and Miami Seaquarium provided interactive exhibits; there was a bounce house, inflatable basketball courts, face painting, arts and crafts, games-- and more for the kiddies. Vendors offered great food and there was a special Bakery Tent filled with mouth-watering pastries enjoyed with a fabulous cup of Café Pilon coffee. YUM!

The Walk is the Humane Society of Greater Miami's largest annual event. This year's event was a success as the Humane Society of Greater Miami met their event fundraising goal. All proceeds benefit the more than 250 animals in their care on a daily basis. The Humane Society of Greater Miami finds homes for more than 2,000 animals per year. Since it receives no government funding, it depends 100% on private donations and special fundraising events such as the Purina Walk for the Animals. Every dollar raised from the Walk goes toward sheltering more than 250 homeless cats and dogs everyday and supporting important programs like low-cost and free spay/neuter services, quality adoptions, humane education and pet therapy.

Rescues Working Together To Benefit The Pets

Sunday, February 8, 2009, 11:14 PM EST [General]

It just goes to show that when people come together for the good of pets great things happen.  J&J's Homeless Pets from Washington, NC partnered with Lab Rescue of North Carolina and Paws4Rescue based out of New England to help save these pups and their mom.  Prior to ending up with J&J's Homeless Pets their future was uncertain.

With the help of a pilot, all pups and mom were flown to Washington, DC where they will be in foster care until they are available for adoption.

Adoptable Search Provides Real Time Available Pets!

Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 08:59 PM EST [General]

Is your shelter using PetPoint's latest feature- the adoptable search?  If not, you should be!

The adoptable search feature enables real time updates, meaning when a pet is available for adoption it is instantly added to your adoptable pet page. Similarly, when a pet is adopted PetPoint ensures that it is immediately removed from your adoptable search; potential adopters are always kept up to the minute regarding available pets at your shelter. PetPoint's adoptable search also ensures that visitors to your site stay remain on your site, they are not re-routed!

Please view the provided attachment; it contains useful information regarding the layout and format of PetPoint's new Adoptable Search.

PetPoint's Adoptable Search can be viewed through Atlanta Humane Society's website:

    http://www.atlantahumane.org/adoption/adopt-pet-dog.htm

The adoptable search is maintenance free and no charge to your organization. It really helps you, staff and potential adopters see your most current pets that are available.

And The Golden Globe Goes To....

Wednesday, January 14, 2009, 10:33 AM EST [General]

How cool is it that Barfly Mickey Rourke not only received the Best Actor nod at the Golden Globes but also thanked his dogs past and present for being there for him.  I was enamoured to say the least.  He was quoted saying in Rolling Stones some years back (I'm improvising) that his dogs kept him going and that they were his true friends.  It's amazing when a man is down and out the only thing that kept him going is his dogs...  I'm sure some other recreational activities did too but you can't deny that he loves his dogs.  His Chihuahua Loki is 17 1/2 years young and he hopes- knocking on wood- she'll be around for a little while longer.

Dogs provide unconditional love, no attitude, and no facade.  They love and that's it.
