    Tragedy to Triumph

On the evening of May 5th, Mizz Ginny was rescued by Hillsborough County Animal Services.  She had not been fed for two months on a chain in someone's back yard.  The investigators thought she was dead, then suddenly her eyes moved.  She was still alive.  She was fed intravenously until she was strong enough to drink water and eat soft food.

On May 19th, Ginny was transferred to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.  Her condition slowly improved.  After a few days, she went into a foster home.  Once she gained enough weight, she underwent heartworm treatment and eventually was put up for adoption at HSTB.

It took a little over a month, but on August 24th she found her new home with a family with two older children.  They have a big house, a nice yard, and plan to spoil Mizz Ginny the way she deserves.

The woman responsible for nearly killing her is facing felony charges for cruelty to animals - intentional starvation and misdemeanor charges for confinement of animals without food and water.

    In Memory of Bonzai

How did I ever make it
    How had I beaten fate
I was born as a pit bull
    And used as fighting bait

My days as a young puppy
    Hold horrid memories
    I only saw how evil
    That some humans can be

    But miracles do happen
And my life had been spared
I was brought to a shelter
    Where somebody had cared

My wounds had been allowed to heal
    My starved body grew strong
But still the road that lie ahead
Of me would be quite long

    I went up for adoption
    I was given a break
Unlike so many pits like me
Whose lives have been at stake

But there are far too many
    Too few neutered or spayed
So most of us don't get the chance
    To live out brighter days

I spent months at the shelter
No one would take me home
    Hope for my future faded
My time was now on loan

    My nature is real friendly
To none I hold a grudge
    But many people's prejudice
    Is something hard to budge

And then one day my ship came in
    Again I'd beaten fate
    A loving family spotted me
    Before it was too late

I now have my own family
    So much love I return
I hope that from my story
    I help someone to learn

    My breed is very loving
Most of us have huge hearts
Though it is true that in this life
Some of us have rough starts

I am a pit who made it
But most like me do not
The horror of pit bull abuse
    Someday soon has to stop

For those who breed and fight us
    I hope there is remorse
And for those who strive to help us
    I hope there is recourse

And for those who hold a prejudice
I hope that they will learn
That all the fears they have of us
    Is nothing that we've earned

Once I was a Lonely Dog

Friday, August 15, 2008, 07:18 AM CST [General]

Once I was a lonely dog,
    Just looking for a home.

I had no place to go,
No one to call my own.

I wandered up and down the streets,
in rain in heat and snow.

I ate what ever I could find,
I was always on the go.

My skin would itch, my feet were sore,
    My body ached with pain.

And no one stopped to give a pat
Or to gently say my name.

I never saw a loving glance,
I was always on the run.

For people thought that hurting me
    was really lots of fun.

And then one day I heard a voice
    So gentle, kind and sweet,
And arms so soft reached down to me
And took me off my feet.

"No one again will hurt you"
    Was whispered in my ear.

"You'll have a home to call your own
where you will know no fear.
    "
"You will be dry, you will be warm,
    you'll have enough to eat
And rest assured that when you sleep,
your dreams will all be sweet.
    "
I was afraid I must admit,
I've lived so long in fear.

    I can't remember when I let
    A human come so near.

And as she tended to my wounds
And bathed and brushed my fur
She told me 'bout the rescue group
And what it meant to her.

She said, "We are a circle,
    A line that never ends.

And in the center there is you
    protected by new friends.
    "
    "And all around you are
the ones that check the pounds,
And those that share their home
    after you've been found.
    "
    "And all the other folk
    are searching near and far.

To find the perfect home for you,
where you can be a star.
    "
She said, "There is a family,
    that's waiting patiently,
and pretty soon we'll find them,
    just you wait and see.
    "
"And then they'll join our circle
they'll help to make it grow,
so there'll be room for more like you,
who have no place to go.
    "
    I waited very patiently,
The days they came and went.

    Today's the day I thought,
    my family will be sent.

Then just when I began to think
    It wasn't meant to be,
    there were people standing there
    just gazing down at me.

I knew them in a heart beat,
I could tell they felt it too.

They said, "We have been waiting
for a special dog like you.
    "
Now every night I say a prayer
to all the gods that be.

"Thank you for the life I live
    and all you've given me.

But most of all protect the dogs
in the pound and on the street.

    And send a Rescue Person
to lift them off their feet.
    "
