General Shelter Safety Rules

All accidents, no matter how slight, must be reported at once. A written "incident report" must be filed. In the event you have an accident at work, we will see that you receive proper medical attention.

Incorporate these basic safety rules into your daily work habits:

  1. Each and ever staff and volunteer is expected to aid the animals to the best of his/her ability.
  2. Use proper lifting procedures. Know your own limits and get help when it is more that you can safely handle.
  3. Wet floors, even a few drops- can cause accidents. We are ALL responsible for wiping up spills at once.
  4. Slow down and take short steps when you are forced to walk on wet, slippery surfaces.
  5. Pick up all debris from the floors.
  6. NO running.
  7. Stay alert! Watch where you are going- especially through doorways, around corners and in busy hallways.
  8. No "horseplay".
  9. Always ask instructions before using any equipment with which your are not familiar.
  10. Adhere to our dress code by wearing closed shoes or boots at all times.
  11. Smoke in designated areas. Never leave a cigarette unattended.
  12. Keep you work area clean and uncluttered.
  13. Complete an "incident report" while that facts are still fresh in your mind and prior to leaving the shift. Ask supervisor for assistance if needed.
  14.  If an animal makes you feel uncomfortable moving or taking it out of its cage or run please notify your department supervisor.
  15. Notify your supervisor if you notice a negative change in an animals behavior.

We must take personal responsibility and work as a team to keep our work environment safe.

I have read and understand the General Shelter Safety Rules.
